Structured nutrition under medical supervision
W8MD Very-Low-Calorie Diet and 800-Calorie Medical Plan
A very-low-calorie diet can produce rapid initial weight loss in selected patients, but an approximately 800-calorie plan is medical treatment—not a do-it-yourself crash diet.
What is a VLCD?
A very-low-calorie diet uses a tightly structured energy intake, often with nutritionally designed meal replacements and adequate protein. It may be considered when a patient needs an intensive approach because of obesity-related risk, an upcoming medically necessary goal or inadequate response to less structured treatment.

What W8MD supervision may include
- Medical screening and medication review before starting
- Individual calorie and protein targets
- Meal replacements or portion-controlled foods
- Hydration, fiber and electrolyte guidance
- Blood-pressure or diabetes-medication adjustment when needed
- Monitoring dizziness, weakness, constipation, gallstone risk and other symptoms
- Resistance activity and protein strategies to preserve lean mass
- Planned transition to sustainable meals and maintenance
VLCD with or without medication
A VLCD may be used without medication or combined with an appropriate prescription when benefits outweigh risks. GLP-1 treatment can reduce appetite, but very low intake can also make protein, hydration and micronutrient adequacy more difficult. More medication is not always better.
Frequently asked questions
How fast will I lose?
Rates vary. Rapid-loss promises are inappropriate; safety, adherence, starting weight and medical status influence results.
Is a VLCD ketogenic?
It may induce ketosis, but a VLCD is defined primarily by very low energy intake and medical structure, not merely carbohydrate restriction.
What happens after the program?
A gradual food transition and maintenance plan are essential to reduce rebound eating and regain.
