Wegovy, Zepbound and medical-visit benefits
Insurance Coverage and Prior Authorization for GLP-1 Weight Loss
Insurance for the physician visit and insurance for the medication are separate benefits. Understanding that difference can prevent delays, surprise costs and misleading coverage claims.
Two benefits must be checked
Medical benefit
Covers eligible office or telemedicine visits subject to network status, referral rules, deductible, copay and coinsurance.
Pharmacy benefit
Determines whether Wegovy, Zepbound or another drug is on formulary and whether exclusions, step therapy, quantity limits or prior authorization apply.
A covered visit does not mean the drug is covered. A drug denial does not necessarily mean the treatment is medically inappropriate.
What prior authorization may require
- Current and historical BMI
- Weight-related diagnoses
- Previous structured weight-management attempts
- Previous medication trials or step therapy
- Documentation of response for renewal
- Use of a designated pharmacy
- Provider-network or specialist rules
W8MD can submit accurate clinical documentation when coverage exists and criteria appear to be met. The insurer or pharmacy-benefit manager makes the decision; approval is never guaranteed.
W8MD affordable GLP-1 starting pathways
With insurance accepted for qualifying medical visits. Self-pay options start from $59.99/week and up.
With insurance accepted for qualifying medical visits. Self-pay options start from $69.99/week and up.
Starting prices are not guaranteed for every dose or patient and may change. Visit cost, medication, laboratory testing, supplies, shipping, copay, deductible and dose increases may be separate. Confirm what is included before treatment.

If coverage is denied
Options may include correcting missing information, an appropriate appeal, using a covered alternative, considering a lower-cost oral medication or selecting a transparent self-pay pathway. Never obtain an unverified product simply because a brand is denied.
Frequently asked questions
Can W8MD guarantee approval?
No. W8MD can document medical necessity, but the insurer controls approval.
Does Medicare cover obesity medication?
Coverage depends on current law, plan design and indication. Confirm the exact product and benefit rather than assuming.
Can an out-of-network clinician submit authorization?
Sometimes, depending on the plan and pharmacy benefit. Network status and authorization rules should be checked separately.
