Affordable GLP-1 Weight Loss Injections in NYC and Philadelphia
W8MD offers physician-supervised semaglutide- and tirzepatide-based weight-management pathways through active offices in Brooklyn, New York City and Northeast Philadelphia.
What are GLP-1 weight-loss injections?
Incretin-based medicines imitate or enhance signals involved in appetite, satiety, food intake and glucose regulation. They are not simply “fat-burning shots.” Their main weight-management effect comes from helping many patients feel satisfied with less food and maintain a reduced energy intake.
Semaglutide
Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Wegovy is its FDA-approved weight-management brand. Ozempic is a semaglutide diabetes brand and should not be presented as interchangeable with Wegovy's labeling, doses or insurance pathway.
Tirzepatide
Tirzepatide activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors. Zepbound is its FDA-approved weight-management brand and is also approved for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity. Mounjaro is the diabetes brand.

Semaglutide versus tirzepatide at a glance
| Feature | Semaglutide | Tirzepatide |
|---|---|---|
| Drug class | GLP-1 receptor agonist | Dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist |
| Weight-management brand | Wegovy | Zepbound |
| Diabetes brand | Ozempic | Mounjaro |
| Usual injection frequency | Once weekly under product-specific labeling | Once weekly under product-specific labeling |
| Pivotal obesity trial average | 14.9% at 68 weeks with Wegovy 2.4 mg in STEP 1 | 15.0% to 20.9% at 72 weeks across Zepbound doses in SURMOUNT-1 |
| Direct comparison | 13.7% at 72 weeks at studied maximum tolerated semaglutide doses in SURMOUNT-5 | 20.2% at 72 weeks at studied maximum tolerated tirzepatide doses in SURMOUNT-5 |
| Starting W8MD insured-visit pathway | $29.99/week+ | $45/week+ |
| Starting W8MD self-pay pathway | $59.99/week+ | $69.99/week+ |
The direct trial compared the studied formulations and maximum tolerated doses available in that protocol; it did not evaluate every newer semaglutide formulation or dose. A group average does not determine the best medication for an individual.
What results did the major studies report?
STEP 1: Wegovy
Adults without diabetes receiving weekly semaglutide 2.4 mg plus lifestyle treatment lost an average of 14.9% at 68 weeks, compared with 2.4% for placebo.
Read STEP 1SURMOUNT-1: Zepbound
Adults without diabetes receiving tirzepatide lost averages of 15.0%, 19.5% and 20.9% at the studied 5, 10 and 15 mg doses over 72 weeks, versus 3.1% for placebo.
Read SURMOUNT-1SURMOUNT-5: head-to-head
Among adults with obesity without diabetes, tirzepatide produced 20.2% mean loss versus 13.7% with semaglutide over 72 weeks at the studied maximum tolerated doses.
Read SURMOUNT-5Who may qualify?
FDA-approved chronic weight-management products have product-specific indications. Common adult criteria include obesity, or overweight with at least one weight-related condition, together with reduced-calorie nutrition and increased physical activity. W8MD may review:
- Weight, BMI, waist-related risk and treatment history
- High blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol, prediabetes or type 2 diabetes
- Sleep apnea, fatty liver disease, PCOS and mobility limitations
- Current medicines and causes of weight gain
- Pregnancy status or plans and product-specific contraindications
Meeting a BMI threshold does not guarantee a prescription. Clinical judgment and the current label control.
Side effects and safety considerations
Common effects
Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal discomfort, indigestion and reduced appetite are common with both. Gradual dose escalation can improve tolerability, but patients should not increase a dose simply because a schedule permits it.
Important screening
Current labels include boxed warnings about thyroid C-cell tumors observed in animals and contraindications for personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN2. Pancreatic, gallbladder, kidney, severe gastrointestinal, allergic, pregnancy and medication-interaction considerations also require review.
Tirzepatide has product-specific oral-contraceptive guidance during initiation and escalation. Semaglutide and tirzepatide should not be combined with another product containing the same ingredient or used outside prescriber instructions. Seek prompt care for severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, inability to maintain fluids, serious allergic symptoms or other concerning effects.
FDA-approved versus compounded products
FDA-approved drugs undergo agency review for safety, effectiveness, manufacturing quality and labeling. Compounded medications are not FDA approved and are not generic Wegovy, Ozempic, Zepbound or Mounjaro. FDA has reported concerns involving fraudulent labels, dosing errors, varying concentrations, salt forms and adverse events with unapproved GLP-1 products.
Before paying, ask:
- What exact product am I receiving?
- Is it FDA approved or compounded?
- Who manufactured or compounded it?
- What concentration and dose are prescribed?
- Are visits, supplies and dose increases included?
- How are side effects and emergencies handled?
Insurance visits and prior authorization
W8MD accepts many insurance plans for qualifying medical visits. If a patient meets clinical criteria and the pharmacy benefit covers a requested medicine, W8MD may submit the required prior-authorization documentation.
Visit benefit
Confirm participation, specialist rules, deductible, copay and coinsurance for the exact provider and office.
Drug benefit
Check the exact product, diagnosis, formulary, exclusion, quantity limit, step therapy, renewal criteria and pharmacy network.
Authorization decision
W8MD can submit accurate medical documentation, but the insurer or pharmacy-benefit manager makes the final decision. Approval is never guaranteed.
How W8MD helps patients use GLP-1 treatment wisely
Before treatment
- Review diagnosis and prior weight-loss attempts
- Screen contraindications and interactions
- Compare approved and other lawful options
- Estimate complete—not introductory—cost
- Discuss insurance and prior authorization
During and after treatment
- Guide dose decisions and side-effect management
- Plan protein, hydration and resistance activity
- Screen for sleep apnea when relevant
- Track response, adherence and affordability
- Prepare for plateaus and long-term maintenance
W8MD can also discuss traditional medicines, structured nutrition, meal replacements or a non-medication plan when semaglutide or tirzepatide is not appropriate or sustainable.
Weight maintenance matters
Obesity is often chronic. Studies of both semaglutide and tirzepatide show that stopping effective treatment commonly leads to weight regain. This is not a personal failure; appetite-regulating biology can re-emerge when treatment ends.
A W8MD maintenance plan may include continued medication when appropriate, nutrition and protein targets, physical activity, sleep-apnea treatment, monitoring for regain, and an alternative plan if insurance or affordability changes.
W8MD patient experience
“Fantastic program! Truly a life changer. I lost 87 pounds in 10 months.”
— D.M., W8MD patient story
Individual experience; results vary.
Results require more than an injection
Patient feedback also highlights nutrition education, clinician experience and help staying focused. Medication can reduce hunger, but sustainable care connects that opportunity with healthier routines and follow-up.
Testimonials do not predict another patient's result. Outcomes vary with health, treatment, dose, nutrition, activity, sleep, adherence, duration and follow-up.

Frequently asked questions
How much does semaglutide start at through W8MD?
Semaglutide-based options start from $29.99 per week and up with qualifying insured visits or $59.99 per week and up self-pay. Price generally increases with dose, and all qualifications apply.
How much does tirzepatide start at through W8MD?
Tirzepatide-based options start from $45 per week and up with qualifying insured visits or $69.99 per week and up self-pay. Price generally increases with dose.
Which produced more weight loss, semaglutide or tirzepatide?
Tirzepatide produced greater average weight loss in SURMOUNT-5 at the doses studied. That does not make it the safest, most affordable or most suitable choice for every patient.
Are Ozempic and Wegovy the same?
They contain semaglutide but are separate branded products with different FDA labeling, dosing and coverage rules. Wegovy is the weight-management brand.
Are Mounjaro and Zepbound the same?
They contain tirzepatide but have different brand labeling and indications. Zepbound is the weight-management brand and also has an OSA indication in adults with obesity.
Does insurance for my visit cover the medication?
Not necessarily. Medical-visit and pharmacy-drug benefits are separate. W8MD can help with prior-authorization documentation when coverage exists and the patient qualifies.
Can I stop after reaching my goal?
Stopping may lead to regain. A clinician should help decide whether to continue, transition or stop treatment and create a maintenance strategy.
How do I get started?
