Did our conventional wisdom that "you eat too much, you gain weight, so stop eating and you should lose weight" fail us?
If it is as simple as eat less, exercise more, why is it that up to 70% of the entire population of the United States are either overweight or obese?
Can insulin resistance cause your sugar cravings?
Yes. Since insulin levels being high in patients who are insulin resistant means that they go in to a state of metabolic starvation. Fat storage signal is turned on when insulin levels are high and fat burning when insulin levels are low.

Could it be that we are fighting the wrong war?
What if there is something more sinister metabolic process that is causing the weight gain and eating is not the direct cause but a response on the part of the body to this metabolic process?
Studies have shown that up to 71% of the population are insulin resistant. Understanding the true cause of weight gain helps change what really is causing the weight gain!
Of the 71%, half of them or about 35% of the entire population have metabolic syndrome with central or abdominal weight gain, along with a few other changes in the blood work as noted in the picture.
Insulin resistance causes weight gain and not the other way around!
The traditional thinking that you get insulin resistance after you gain weight is also flawed as recent evidence shows that insulin resistance can in fact make a person gain weight by way of the anabolic or body building actions of the hormone insulin.
How does this work?
Let us say you are insulin resistant(71% of the entire population including some kids are insulin resistant), then you have two options - either be diabetic or over produce insulin so you are not diabetic. The body normal can compensate to insulin resistance by over producing insulin so you are not diabetic until this fails.
This excess insulin causes weight gain! As insulin is anabolic, it makes a person gain weight, especially in the belly and upper part of the body.
Can insulin resistance cause your sugar cravings?
Yes. Since insulin levels being high in patients who are insulin resistant means that they go in to a state of metabolic starvation. Fat storage signal is turned on when insulin levels are high and fat burning when insulin levels are low.
Vicious cycle of sugar rush, crash and cravings for sugar!
If a person is insulin resistant(71% of the people are), then they are stuck in fat storage signal as high levels of insulin bock the release back of the fat that was just stored even when you need it. This triggers sugar cravings 3-4 hours after a starchy diet leading to overeating and more cravings thus setting in a vicious cycle of sugar rush after a meal, sugar crash 3-4 hours later, cravings, more consumption of starchy diet and weight gain as a result!
This forms the basis of the new science where weight gain and obesity are not seen as the problem in itself but a result of a more sinister process called insulin resistance or metabolic syndrome.
In fact, studies have shown that this process of insulin resistance is so prevalent that a recent study shows up to 40% of the population are projected to become diabetic in the next 20 years!
As obesity has significant health costs both direct and indirect, and it affects up to 50 different medical problems, it is important to lose weight to improve overall health and longevity!
